This training aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) among youth, focusing on prevalence, functions of the behavior, and appropriate responses in school and clinical settings. Participants will engage with the content from a variety of perspectives in order to holistically conceptualize NSSI as a behavior requiring individualized assessment and intervention. This training is designed for counselor-in-training, professional counselors, and counselor supervisors.
After completing this session, participants will be able to: Define NSSI and identify its prevalence and risk factors among youth, differentiating it from suicidal behavior. Explain the various functions of NSSI, including affect regulation, interpersonal influence, and inducing positive emotions, to inform appropriate intervention strategies. Describe research-informed recommendations for managing NSSI in schools and clinical settings, including initial response protocols, assessment approaches, and behavioral response tools (i.e. FBA/BSPs and Safety Plans).
This workshop is hosted online from 5pm to 8pm, via Zoom. A link to the meeting will be provided to all particpants prior to the course date.
