Course summary:
The Wilderness Act of 1964 provides legal guidance for the management of designated wilderness areas. It is subject to specific special provisions that may be included in subsequent wilderness-designating legislation. This course will identify the ANILCA special provisions and explain how they are implemented within the context of the Wilderness Act of 1964 and other considerations for managing wilderness in Alaska.
Course objectives:
After completing this course, learners should be able to:
• Explain how the authority for managing wilderness in Alaska works under both the Wilderness Act of 1964 and ANILCA.
• Locate Alaskan wilderness management policy and regulations for your agency.
• Describe the significance of wilderness in the creation and passage of ANILCA.
• Identify areas in Alaska designated as wilderness by ANILCA.
• Explain how ANILCA-designated wilderness areas are administered.
• Identify special provisions for managing wilderness in Alaska provided by ANILCA.
• Demonstrate how these special provisions are implemented.
• Use an MRA to guide your decisions for managing wilderness in Alaska.
• Describe the process required for conducting wilderness reviews in Alaska.
• Explain the status of wilderness designation for each of the federal agencies.

Recommended background
It is strongly recommended that you complete The Wilderness Act of 1964 e-course before beginning this course. Without a foundational understanding of the Wilderness Act, you will not be able to get the most out of this course and could find the content confusing. The Minimum Requirements Analysis courses (both Writing and Evaluating) are also strongly recommended.
