Special Provisions in Wilderness: Aircraft and Motorboats   

Course summary: 

This course covers the special provision of the Wilderness Act of 1964 that grants public use of aircraft and motorized boats in some wilderness areas. 

Course objectives: 

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

• List the circumstances when landing aircraft or motorboat use in wilderness is allowed by the Wilderness Act. 

• Recognize how special language in designating legislation may impact aircraft and motorboat use. 

• Describe common mistakes in dealing with aircraft and motorboat use in wilderness and corresponding solutions. 

• Find federal agency policies that address the special provisions of landing aircraft and motorboat use. 

• List the circumstances when aircraft, motorboat, and other prohibited uses are allowed in Alaskan wilderness by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. 

• Describe appropriate facility maintenance needed to enable approved use of aircraft and motorboats in wilderness.
