Managing Special Provisions in Wilderness - Fire   

Course summary: 

Managing wildfire in any setting can be complicated, but in wilderness there are many more considerations to keep in mind to maintain wilderness character. This course reviews the appropriate management of fire in wilderness, including the use of prescribed fire and fuel treatments. 

Course objectives: 

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

• Recognize the natural role of fire in your wilderness. 

• Locate your agency's policy for managing wilderness fire. 

• Compare managing fire in wilderness and fire outside of wilderness. 

• Contribute to the fire management planning process in your wilderness area. 

• Respond to ongoing projects/incidents in your wilderness area. 

• Describe the responsibilities of wilderness specialists and fire management specialists when managing fire in wilderness. 

• Explain the process for determining appropriate use of fire for resource benefits and non-fire fuel treatments. 

• Explain remediation and rehabilitation as they apply to fire in wilderness.

This course is self-paced, allowing learners the flexibility to complete the course as quickly or slowly as they need. 

After completing all course content and activities, you will complete a final quiz to demonstrate your understanding of key course concepts. Upon successful completion of the quiz, you will be awarded a certificate of completion. 

Recommended background:

It is strongly recommended that you complete the free The Wilderness Act of 1964 e-course before beginning this course. Without foundational knowledge of the Wilderness Act, you will not be able to get the most out of this course and could find the content confusing. It is also recommended that you complete the Minimum Requirements Analysis courses.
