Special Provisions in Wilderness: Insects & Disease   

Course summary: 

Managing insects and disease in any setting can be complicated, but managing wilderness to minimize insect and disease impacts requires both a clear understanding of your area's objectives and careful consideration of acceptable management actions. This course reviews appropriate management considerations for managing insects and disease in wilderness. 

Course objectives: 

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

  • Recognize the impact of managing insects and disease on wilderness character. 

  • Locate your agency's policy for managing insects and disease in wilderness. 

  • Describe differences in the impact of exotic versus native insects and disease, both in wilderness and outside of wilderness. 

  • Discuss appropriate and effective actions for controlling insects and disease in wilderness. 

  • Explain how climate change may impact the management of insects and disease in wilderness.

  • Appropriate and Effective Actions for Control

This course is self-paced, allowing learners the flexibility to complete the course as quickly or slowly as they need. 

After completing all course content and activities, you will complete a final quiz to demonstrate your understanding of key course concepts. Upon successful completion of the quiz, you will be awarded a certificate of completion. 

Recommended background:

It is strongly recommended that you complete the free The Wilderness Act of 1964 e-course before beginning this course. Without foundational knowledge of the Wilderness Act, you will not be able to get the most out of this course and could find the content confusing. It is also recommended that you complete the Minimum Requirements Analysis (Writing and Evaluating) courses.
