Certified Nursing Assistant - CNA

It is not an easy job, but it is one that can be very rewarding. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, you’ll be on the front lines of patient care. While “nursing assistant” may not be the most glorified job title in a hospital or nursing care facility, it’s certainly one of the most vital to daily operations. Your compassion and skill in patient care will help minimize the stress of those who are sick or unable to care for themselves.

Certified Nursing Assistants are the foundation of in-patient care. CNAs work in nursing homes, hospitals, mental health facilities, assisted living facilities and private homes. They are often under the supervision of a nurse to provide assistance to patients with daily living tasks.

Job prospects for CNAs are expected to keep growing due to the increasing long-term care needs of an aging population. The course includes: classroom (48 hours) and clinical hours (27 hours) to provide training in competent and holistic care.

In the classroom component, CNA students learn several important nursing skill areas, including the following:
• Communication skills
• Patients’ rights
• Personal care
• Safety and emergency care
• End-of-life care
• Restorative care
• Infection control
• Basic anatomy and physiology

Application process — You will be required to submit an application to be accepted for this course. Application may be printed here, or you may pick up a copy in person at the college: 1115 N. Roberts, Room 113. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and are due no later than two weeks before the class start date. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Applications will be processed in 3 business days. Full payment or $100 non-refundable deposit will be due 3 days after notification of acceptance, with full payment due 5 business days before class start.

Attendance — Since the number of education hours is dictated by the State Board, superb attendance is mandatory in order to pass the class. Absences or repeated tardiness may result in failure of the class.

Immunizations — During the clinical component, supervised students work with real patients in a long-term care setting. Therefore, immunization records will be required. See application for details.

Additional materials required — You will be required to wear scrubs for your skills nights beginning on week two, for clinicals, and for your skills testing. You will also need a watch with a second hand. A blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, and gait belt are not required, but are useful for employment after certification.

Certification exam — Upon successful completion of the classroom and clinical hours, you will take the State Certification exam with the class. You must test at the same time as the rest of the class. If you are unable to attend the scheduled test, or require re-testing, additional fees may apply.

Scholarship opportunity — There will be a $500 scholarship awarded to one applicant per year. The application for the Lacee Miller Scholarship is due to the Financial Aid Department by July 1 and can be used for the C.N.A. class ONLY. If you receive the scholarship after you pass the class, it can be awarded as a refund. If you are applying for the scholarship, please let us know!
