Bears to Butterflies, Conservation Potential on Private Lands - In-Person

Private working lands provide some of the best available habitats in the West and support a multitude of species. We will talk about the nature of working land management that contributes to those successes and recognize those on the landscape who work hard to enhance the habitat on those lands. We will look at how those species are currently not just surviving on the lands but thriving and delve into practices, policy, and programs that will help to conserve these communities (plant, animal, and human) over the next 100 years.

Grizzly Bear Recovery and Management in the Rocky Mountains - In-Person

This review of the historic and present status of grizzly bears in the western U.S. and the human and political challenges to maintaining healthy grizzly populations will include the historical range of grizzlies, what caused their decline with European settlement of the West, and the effort to recover them in the Northern Rockies. I will also discuss the current status of grizzlies, threats to their survival in the future, and the political challenges to state management of grizzlies. Finally, I will talk about the causes and solutions to human/bear conflicts and interactions and how we can safely live with grizzlies and recreate in grizzly habitat.

PEAS Farm and Garden City Harvest - In-Person

The PEAS Farm is the largest of Garden City Harvest’s 21 urban farms and gardens and serves in partnership with the University of Montana’s Environmental Studies Program. This lecture will focus on the origins of the PEAS Farm and of Garden City Harvest. We will share how this beloved nonprofit went from a small, grassroots operation to serving more than 20,000 people in Missoula annually.

This event presents a unique opportunity to meet and hear Kate Davis, executive director of the Raptor of the Rockies, explain her life’s work, which includes several thousand lectures about the bird of prey she cares for at her ranch and introduce four of them in “person” to the class. Her experiences, her writings, her photographs,and her art enhance the oral presentation where you will meet some of her birds.

Few people in Missoula know that there is such a thing as the Missoula Police Commission. The Missoula Police Commission is there to represent the interests of the community and provide feedback to the Missoula Police Department. This presentation will be delivered by Dan Doyle, retired UM professor and chair of the Missoula Police Commission. He will talk about what police commissions are; what they do and don’t do;the role of the Missoula Police Commission in screening officer candidates; how to file a complaint against the Missoula Police Department; the kinds of complaints commonly lodged in Missoula; how complaints are investigated; and the process used by the Missoula Police Commission to review investigations of complaints.
