Introduction To ArcMap & ArcCatalog  

ArcMap and ArcCatalog have been the mainstay of the ArcGIS Platform for close to 20 years. Though these applications are being phased out by Esri, many organizations are still using these proven applications as the backbone for their GIS. This 16-hour course will teach students how to perform basic GIS operations including creating maps, editing data, and performing basic analysis.

Topics Covered:

    1. Introducing ArcMap and ArcCatalog

    2. Adding and configuring layers

    3. Editing Spatial and Tabular Data

    4. Creating & Printing Layouts

    5. Querying Data

    6. Linking Data

    7. Geocoding Data

    8. Accessing Geoprocessing tools

Intended Audience

This course is intended for those that will also use ArcMap and ArcCatalog in addition to ArcGIS Pro to perform GIS functions.

Prerequisites and requirements

Students will need a basic or higher license of ArcMap and ArcCatalog. If you do not have access to these licenses, you can request trial licenses from Esri on their website at - or purchase an ArcGIS Personal Use license (

Course Materials:

    1. PDF copies of lecture slides

    2. Getting to Know ArcGIS 4th Edition by Michael Law and Amy Collins (must be purchased from Esri Press, Amazon or another book seller)

    3. UNA Certificate of Completion

Since non-credit courses are subject to cancellation if there is insufficient enrollment, do not purchase your textbook until you are notified by UNA Continuing Education that the course will be held.
