Brilliant Lights in Northern Gloom: The Renaissance in Northern Europe

Delight in some iconic yet often overlooked art of that seminal era. Begin with early Netherlandish painters from the incomparable Jan van Eyck to the otherworldly Hieronymus Bosch as well as the iconic, influential figures Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt Van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer. Examine the roles of the Dukes of Burgundy, trade and economics, and location, location, location. Consider whether this florescence in art might have eclipsed that of Italy in the same period.
