Osher Online: The World of Musical Satire

Explore the delights of the topic in a variety of genres, cultures and eras, especially America since 1950. Since satire is often dependent on social and historical events, this course is as much cultural history as music appreciation. Yes, words are pre-eminent, you'll also consider music and its interactions with lyrics. Examine "Yankee Doodle," slave satire, Gilbert & Sullivan, the Gershwins and Marx Brothers, Tom Lehrer, Randy Newman, Monty Python, Spinal Tap, "Saturday Night Live," "South Park," Key and Peele and a bountiful bevy of Bs: Leonard Bernstein, the Beatles, Rachel Bloom ("Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"), Bo Burnham and Bugs Bunny.
