Four Revolutionary Symphonies

Learn how the Third Symphony (1804) by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827) overturned the artistic conventions of his day. Discover how Hector Berlioz's (1803 – 1869) unprecedented outpourings in this Symphony fantastique (1830) almost overpowered Paris. Charles Ives’ (1874 – 1954) A Symphony: New England Holidays embodies a dynamic range of emotions from tender sentiment to savage chaos while providing listeners with a unique confrontational tour of that region’s early 20th century terrain. Conclude with an investigation of the arresting music that would either redeem or doom Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 – 1975). Did he dare hide a kernel of music criticism in his Fifth Symphony in what appears to be a paean to Mother Russia? Bring your curiosity to this lively music appreciation program.
