ED-venture: St. Augustine Art and History – Governor’s House Cultural Center and Museum and Spanish Military Hospital

Begin with a guided tour of the building and the University of Florida’s role in maintaining the historic heritage of the Oldest City. The building, known as Government House, has a long, fascinating history. Its site has been home to several government offices since 1598. The display presents the history of the site and features a timeline to the present day. The museum presents the exhibition, “Painting St. Augustine: Selections from the Samuel H. and Roberta Vickers Collection” of Florida themed art, focusing on works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Some works reveal the city’s unique topography and climate as well as its people and their daily lives. Others focus on iconic architectural, cultural and natural locales. Debrief with fellow OLLIs over a box lunch (included in your fee). Then make your way (three-minute walk) to the Spanish Military Hospital. Your guided tour takes you back to the colonial days of medicine. Begin as a skilled surgeon performs a demonstration. Then, an apothecary creates herbal medicines, some of which are the origins of today’s most popular medicines. Venue is fully accessible. Transportation and parking are on your own.

Required: Mobility to move between venues, physical stamina on tours
