Fashion Influencers of the French Revolution

The French Revolution likely conjures historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, Marquis de Lafayette, and Robespierre. Let’s not forget, however, three scandalous and beautiful French women of the early 19th century -- Josephine Bonaparte (1763 – 1814), Juliette Récamier (1777 – 1849) and Térézia Tallien (1773 – 1835) -- who brought about radical shifts in fashion that embodied the ideas of the French Revolution. Indeed, these women viewed clothing as a fierce rebellion, and they broke the rules! Discover how women’s clothing became a force of social and cultural change. Learn about this fascinating trio of friends who lived during the infamous Reign of Terror, a time of tremendous violence, and who overcame so much to give other women freedom. Enjoy stories about three amazing influencers and the fabulous fashions they wore in this illustrated lecture and discussion class.
