The Bible in Light of the Ancient Near East

Until the 19th century, the Bible was widely regarded as a unique and extraordinary literary work. Yet, archaeological discoveries and scholarly research into the ancient Near East have revealed significant connections between biblical texts and the broader cultural and literary traditions of that region. Explore how the Bible reflects and reinterprets themes found in the civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia among others. From legal codes to creation stories, biblical writings often adapt earlier ideas within a distinct monotheistic framework. These parallels highlight the Bible’s place within a rich and complex literary environment shaped by centuries of interaction and exchange. Acquire a foundational understanding of the Bible’s historical and cultural setting. Gain insights into shared themes, myths and moral teachings across ancient texts. Appreciate the literary and philosophical influences that shaped biblical narratives. Take a deeper look at the Bible not only as a religious text, but also as a product of its time and place. Your interest is all that’s required to participate in this lecture and discussion program. Instructor provides helpful resources.
