In 1927, Erwin H. Barbour, a professor of geology and zoology at the University of Nebraska and director of the Nebraska State Museum, was asked to fill another role: artist. Barbour drew pictures of fossil plants and animals for artist Hildreth Meiere to copy. She used these drawings to make mosaic pictures of fossils on the floor of the Nebraska State Capitol rotunda. Meiere also designed mosaics for the dome of the rotunda as well as for the foyer and vestibule. Learn about the fossils, the mosaics and what they depict.
