Stories in Text and Film

After stories came into being in spoken language, they were written down, and then printed in books. We pay homage to this medium by talking about "literature." But in roughly the last century, motion pictures and television have taken over a predominant role in narrative communication. "Have you seen the movie?" ranks right up there with "Have you read any good books lately?" How do these versions of "telling" and "showing" compare in the ways they are constructed and appreciated? We will review general issues and specific examples of written and depicted stories.
