This opera is noted for its showcasing of the female voice, as its protagonists are written to be portrayed by women who share several duets and perform as a trio during the opera’s emotional climax. We will listen to and discuss the history of this opera: its structure, information about the composer’s sources for the opera, and different musical elements which are characteristic of this opera.Other information will be shared to define additional contributions to the opera genre.

- Stories in Text and Film
-
REGISTRATION FOR THIS CLASS IS CLOSED. This class is already in session.
After stories came into being in spoken language, they were written down, and then printed in books. We pay homage to this medium by talking about "literature." But in roughly the last century, motion pictures and television have taken over a predominant role in narrative communication. "Have you seen the movie?" ranks right up there with "Have you read any good books lately?" How do these versions of "telling" and "showing" compare in the ways they are constructed and appreciated? We will review general issues and specific examples of written and depicted stories.
