    College students today, part of “Generation Z,” are navigating coming-of-age in a time of unprecedented challenges. One in three young people report experiencing loneliness much of the time, over half of young people report feeling stressed or anxious all of the time, and all are doing the important work of figuring out who they want to be as they grow up. The longing for connectivity, belonging, and authentic community drives the work of campus ministry. Explore the particular and timeless needs of Gen Z through the lens of faith-based care, through cross-generational learning and multiple denominational perspectives on spiritual nourishment through campus ministry.

    What happened in 2004 to the over 4,000 youth in Nebraska that were placed by the courts in an out-of-home placement? Is there anyone who advocates for them during a court hearing? Who checks to make sure the services provided meet the needs of the child or youth? Learn about CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for abused or neglected, truant and ungovernable children and youth in the juvenile court system and about the Foster Care Review Office (FCRO) for Nebraska. FCRO volunteers oversee the safety, permanence, and well-being of children in out-of-home care. CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of children in the court room and become a stable adult giving the child a fighting chance to gain a voice, achieve safety and stability and develop a sense of self-worth.

    While the phrase “unprecedented times” is the refrain we often hear to describe these days, the deep polarization and the challenge of forming a collective identity are by no means new to the church. Explore the struggles of the early church reflected in the Book of Acts and the letters of Paul as they wrestled with how to pull together Gentile and Judean, slave and free, women, men, and so on into a new community, forging a new communal identity in response to the ground- shaking new things God was doing.

The course will cover major U.S. Indian Policy such as the Dawes Act, Allotments, Termination, Indian Claims Commission, and Relocation. This offering is part of the “Walking in the Footsteps of our Ancestors: Re-Indigenizing Southeast Nebraska” project, a partnership of the Center for Great Plains Studies and the Otoe-Missouria Tribe that is funded by the Mellon Foundation.

    Build your confidence on performing simple maintenance items on your bike. Bike anatomy, fit, ABC quick check, fix a flat, and simple brake and shifting adjustment will be covered. Gain confidence to make simple repairs on the road and to talk to a bike mechanic for the more complex repairs. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes to the class. For those unable to do so, bikes will be provided.

    In 1928, Sarah Joslyn donated over $3 million to fund an arts center for the citizens of Omaha. Over the years, multiple capital construction and renovation projects have improved the experience for visitors. The Joslyn Art Museum has recently reopened. Join us for a guided tour centered on the theme “The Joslyn’s Highlights,” which includes a wide-ranging look at the most well- known and beloved objects in the Museum. The itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors who want to understand just what it is that makes the Joslyn Art Museum so special. This is a different tour than OLLI offered in Term 3. After the tour, stay and enjoy the multiple galleries and the Museum Shop.

    Ruth Etting was one of the most popular American singing stars of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Born in David City, Neb., she had a very successful career in Chicago, New York, and Hollywood. Florenz Ziegfeld, who glorified Ruth in the Follies, rated her as “the greatest singer of songs” that he had managed in a forty-year career. On radio she established herself as America’s pre-eminent popular singer, repeatedly voted as the top female singer on the air in national listener polls and recording over 200 songs by such composers as Irving Berlin, Johnny Green, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Learn about Ruth and her colorful life using archival materials from the UNL Music Library.

    “Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)” is an opera buffa in two acts composed by Gioachino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. Rossini’s Barber of Seville is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music and has been described as the opera buffa of all “opere buffe.” After two centuries, it remains a popular work. We will listen to and discuss the history of this opera; its structure, information about the composer’s sources, and different musical elements which are characteristic of this opera. Other information will be shared to define additional contributions to the opera genre.

    In 2021, the Pershing Mural on one wall of the Pershing Auditorium was on the brink of destruction with no plans to retain it. A small team committed itself to saving the mural and installing it in a fitting location for future generations to enjoy. The first two class sessions will provide an update on the final stages of installing the mural at Wyuka Park, as well as connecting it to the legacy of General of the Armies John J. Pershing. The third session will be a tour of the newly renovated Wyuka Park and the Pershing Mural undergoing installation. Project contractors will explain the intricate techniques required to save what will become the largest free- standing mural of its type in the world. Both sections will meet in the classroom on June 11 and 18, then split into two groups for the walking tours June 25 and July 2.

    This course is a continuation of the Introduction to Bridge I course. It is structured for the student with very limited prior knowledge of the game of bridge. We will cover how the game is played, bridge vocabulary, basic Standard American bidding, and basic card play. Each week, learn new content which builds on the previous week's concepts. There will be ample opportunities to play hands that will illustrate what has been taught in class. The students will dictate the pace of the course so all can grasp the basics of the game.
