    A steamy prohibition tale roars across the stage. Based on the widely banned 1928 narrative poem, this darkly brilliant show features one of the most pulse-racing scores ever written. Lovers Queenie and Burrs plan the party-to-end-all-parties to bring the spark back to their affair. Instead, Queenie’s wandering eye sends Burrs into a jealous rage. As the decadence reaches a climax, Burrs erupts. Gun in hand, Burrs turns on Queenie and her new lover. The gun gets fired, but who gets shot? Join the production team for a talk before the show and stick around for a tour of the theatre with some Omaha history after the show.

    Gain greater proficiency in digital photography while using an advanced amateur camera (adjustable), mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (MILC) or digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. Learn the fundamentals as you practice with your own personal camera. Basic principles of photography will be reviewed and then more sophisticated digital camera operations, such as controls, function and purpose, lighting, composition, hardware options and software will be discussed.

    In 1927, Erwin H. Barbour, a professor of geology and zoology at the University of Nebraska and director of the Nebraska State Museum, was asked to fill another role: artist. Barbour drew pictures of fossil plants and animals for artist Hildreth Meiere to copy. She used these drawings to make mosaic pictures of fossils on the floor of the Nebraska State Capitol rotunda. Meiere also designed mosaics for the dome of the rotunda as well as for the foyer and vestibule. Learn about the fossils, the mosaics and what they depict. The fabrication of the mosaics, the materials used, and the overall project will also be covered.

    Note Locations: June 24 at SCC-CEC Rm 214. July 1st at State Capitol. Meet outside the north entrance at the base of the stairs. Free parking is available on the street surrounding the Capitol, in the residential blocks south of the Capitol, or paid parking is in nearby downtown parking garages.

    In 1928, Sarah Joslyn donated over $3 million to fund an arts center for the citizens of Omaha. Over the years, multiple capital construction and renovation projects have improved the experience for visitors. The Joslyn Art Museum has recently reopened. Join us for a guided tour centered on the theme “The Joslyn’s Highlights,” which includes a wide-ranging look at the most well- known and beloved objects in the Museum. The itinerary is ideal for first-time visitors who want to understand just what it is that makes the Joslyn Art Museum so special. This is a different tour than OLLI offered in Term 3. After the tour, stay and enjoy the multiple galleries and the Museum Shop.

    Learn about the history of Lincoln’s Kennard House, originally the home of Thomas P. Kennard, Nebraska’s first Secretary of State. The Kennard House is the oldest building still standing that was part of Lincoln’s original town plat and was restored as a memorial to Nebraska statehood in 1967. We will tour the home, discuss its construction and architectural history, and learn about archeological investigations of the property conducted by UNL’s Summer Field School in Archeology and the History Nebraska State Archeology Office in the 1990s.
    Entering Kennard House requires walking up several steps. The tour will also include the second floor of the house, accessible by a stairway. Parking is available on H St. and on 16th St., and around the Capitol building, where the limit is two hours.

    “Titanic The Musical” captures the stories of the officers, crew members and passengers of the ever-fascinating catastrophe of the most luxurious ocean liner in the 1900s. From crew in the boiler room to first-class passengers, from the poorest families who scraped together their life savings to purchase third-class tickets, to some of the wealthiest men of the Victorian age, “Titanic” captures the entire range of humanity aboard the ship. Showcasing the grand and majestic ship herself with moments of heartbreaking intimacy, don’t miss this five-time Tony Award winning musical that ran over 800 performances on Broadway in 1997. Enjoy a backstage tour prior to the show.

    Join Founding Director Megan Elliott, along with faculty and students, at the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts as they prepare for their annual Spring Open Studios. We will get a sneak peek at some of the projects they will be presenting and will have an opportunity to speak with the creators. After the class, stay for an evening of exploration and experimentation, and tour the Open Studios from 5-7 p.m. Examples of projects may include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), 3D printing, interactive video, projection mapping and immersive experiences.

    Are you interested in focusing on photography using your mobile devices – smart phones and tablets? Although most of the content will focus on Apple device Technology, it will also cover Android features, multiple apps and photographic principles which are common to all cell phone cameras. There will also be some limited discussion about post processing of photographs using the phone app Snapseed. Please download Snapseed from your app store to enable some practice processing photos on your device during class.

 

  • The Magic of the Metropolitan Opera: "Il Barbiere di Siviglia"

    “Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville)” is an opera buffa in two acts composed by Gioachino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. Rossini’s Barber of Seville is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music and has been described as the opera buffa of all “opere buffe.” After two centuries, it remains a popular work. We will listen to and discuss the history of this opera; its structure, information about the composer’s sources, and different musical elements which are characteristic of this opera. Other information will be shared to define additional contributions to the opera genre.

    In 2021, the Pershing Mural on one wall of the Pershing Auditorium was on the brink of destruction with no plans to retain it. A small team committed itself to saving the mural and installing it in a fitting location for future generations to enjoy. The first two class sessions will provide an update on the final stages of installing the mural at Wyuka Park, as well as connecting it to the legacy of General of the Armies John J. Pershing. The third session will be a tour of the newly renovated Wyuka Park and the Pershing Mural undergoing installation. Project contractors will explain the intricate techniques required to save what will become the largest free- standing mural of its type in the world. Both sections will meet in the classroom on June 11 and 18, then split into two groups for the walking tours June 25 and July 2.

From editing photos to word processing to spreadsheets to turning on and off the lights in your home, these incredibly high-tech devices can be both easy to use and fun. We will touch on some of the more useful features of Apple’s amazing products, as well as demonstrate some practical features and apps to help make your life a bit easier.
