What makes Hawai'i Hawai'i to the people who live there? The Hawai'i seen by tourists differs from the Hawai'i that locals live in. Visitors see the artificial commercial construct, "tourist Hawai'i," passing through without experiencing or paying much attention to the real Hawai'i, which is the result of the blending of many cultures and Western influences. These have shaped Hawai'i's daily life, language, and cuisine, all of which have been significantly impacted by the large numbers of tourists passing through.

Wildfire Smoke: Emission and Transport Research and Ashfall Citizen Science
-
Presenters from the Desert Research Institute will discuss two local research projects that aim to strengthen our understanding of wildfires, including a citizen science project. Predicting wildfire emissions is a challenge because of the myriad factors that influence wildfires’ characteristics and the transport of their emissions. Researchers aim to improve our prediction tools for wildfire emissions by investigating past wildfires, creating numerical models, and using machine learning techniques. Another research project, Ashfall Citizen Science, is aided by the observational skills of community members. By contributing photographs of wildfire ash, citizen scientists help researchers improve analyses of wildfire smoke plumes.

What do we really need to know about our economy and the current economic environment? We all believe we understand terms like “Inflation” or "Recession," but throughout our history, society’s (and certainly economists’) "cures" for these ills have varied dramatically depending on current beliefs about how the economy is actually structured. In this continuation of our long-running “De-Mystifying Economics” series, we will discuss a variety of economic topics from the current news, examine how facts and fictions impact economic policy, and explore what we need to consider to make the economic policies we support reflect reality and solid data.

Sessions: 3
Building: Moana

In a one-year series, we will examine some of the most talked about works of the British Gothic. We will introduce the genre and give some insight into how it has persisted and captivated audiences, both in the written form and on the silver screen.
- September 8: From 1760-1840, a new genre of literature permeated British culture. This style that focused on the dark side of Romanticism is known as the Gothic. Supernatural events, the night of atmosphere and architecture, and the inverse of what was good and pure was explored.
- October 6: The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole (1764): Based on a nightmare that Walpole had, this work (known as the first gothic novel), set the stage for all the genres would do. This work examines the ideas of identity and the darker side of humanity. Its Romantic elements set a juxtaposition to Walpole's learned knowledge of medieval concepts and eighteenth-century definitions of the term. We will explore the evolution of style and the story that has spawned a genre.
- November 17: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1816): This is perhaps the most well-known novel in British gothic. Shelley's tale of suffering and redemption (?) follows fears that exist to this day with the morality of science and ethics of a creator's role. The setting, tone, and imagery all create a mixture of Romanticism and Gothic that has spawned art, movies, television, retellings, and even revision. We will explore all of this to see what Shelley created and how it has endured.
