Anytime someone is called a "Benedict Arnold," everyone knows what that means. In reality, Benedict Arnold was a much more complicated character than most of us realize. In this course, we will explore whether Benedict Arnold was one of the greatest generals of the Revolutionary War, the worst traitor to the American Revolutionary cause . . . or both.

This session will analyze the social and political environment in Dallas during the 50s and 60s, focusing on how Dallas schools responded to Brown v. Board of Education and Dallas political tensions leading up to the JFK assassination. We'll also briefly cover events from early 20th century Dallas history to better understand the more long-term evolution of city politics. Dr. Hancock attended Dallas public schools in the White Rock Lake area in the 1950s and 60s and enjoys studying Dallas history.

A granddaughter of William the Conqueror, Matilda was not initially destined to rule. However, when her only legitimate brother perished in a shipwreck, she became the sole heir to the English throne. Her father, King Henry I, compelled his barons to swear fealty to her three times during his lifetime. Yet upon his death, while Matilda was in France, her cousin Stephen of Blois seized the crown for himself. What followed was a turbulent civil war, subsequently known as The Anarchy, as Matilda fought to reclaim her birthright. This lecture explores her extraordinary struggle for power and the lasting impact it had upon the English monarchy in the Middle Ages.

As the campaign against Japan was progressing, three islands stood in the way before the landing on Japan was to happen - Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and the Palau Islands. This course focuses on a series of battles that took place in one small area toward the end of the WWII Pacific campaign against Japan. It was a battle that should have taken three days, but ended up taking more than 30 and at a great cost. Attendees will hear quotes from soldiers who fought there, and see historical battle photographs.

This session will be based upon an interview with the co-pilot for Jimmy Doolittle and research on the crews who bombed Tokyo within months after Pearl Harbor. Members will get a feel for what it was like to take off from a carrier with no training, head out over hundreds of miles of nothing but ocean, bomb Tokyo in daylight, and try to escape.
