Q1. Do I need to have completed any Prerequisites to apply for this program?
A. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their career goals, which is why we do not require any academic prerequisites before you enroll in the Dental Assistant Training Program. The only requirements you need to fulfill are to be 18 years old or above, have graduated from high school or successfully taken your GED, and have a valid US work authorization. We welcome all who meet these criteria to apply.
*High school seniors in good academic standing can apply for the spring cohort if they are 18 years of age by the program start date.
Q2. I am an Undergraduate. Can I apply?
A. Yes, it is possible to participate in the program. The first 12 weeks consist of online didactic coursework, which is partially self-paced but includes weekly deadlines and assignments to help students stay on track. Please note: that you would still need to complete the 6 month clinical hours in the second phase of the program. Please reach out to our program email at DAprogram@pitt.edu for clarification on your specific situation.
Q3. I am working full-time. Can I still enroll?
A. Yes! Our program is designed with working professionals in mind. The first 12 weeks are online and flexible, so you can complete coursework on your own time while meeting weekly deadlines. However, the clinical phase will require set hours in a dental office, so scheduling flexibility with your employer may be necessary at that stage.
Q4. How are applications evaluated?
A. Applications are reviewed based on the quality of essay and video responses. Strong applicants provide clear, thoughtful, and authentic answers that show their interest in dentistry and highlight their unique strengths and experiences. Be genuine and detailed that’s what helps your application stand out.
Q5. Do you accept FAFSA? Is there any Scholarships or financial assistance for the program trainees?
A. We do not accept FAFSA; however, there are several alternative funding options you can explore. Some trainees apply for scholarships like the ones found through the DANB or the DALE Foundation. Others arrange clinical sponsorships (refer to Fee Sponsorship and Supportive Service Options here).
Q6. Are accommodations available for trainees with documented learning or medical needs?
A. Yes. If you have a documented medical condition, disability, or learning need that requires accommodations such as extended testing time, flexible deadlines, or other academic support, we’re happy to work with you. Trainees seeking accommodations should provide appropriate documentation, and we’ll coordinate with the University’s Office of Disability Resources and Services to ensure your needs are met within University policy and ADA guidelines.
Q7. How can I get answers to my questions or speak with someone directly?
A.The best way to have your questions answered is by joining our program webinar, where you can ask questions during the live Q&A session.
If you prefer, you can also email us at DAprogram@pitt.edu, and a team member will respond within 24 hours.
Q8. Where can I get more information about the program?
A. We encourage all prospective trainees to attend a program webinar. The session provides a detailed overview of the program structure, coursework, and time expectations. You’re welcome to listen in without using your camera and ask questions either in the chat or during the Q&A session at the end.
