Fundamental handbuilding skills and techniques will be covered including pinch pots, coil building, and slab construction with a focus on fun, artful, and utilitarian forms as well as surface techniques to add decorative elements to make the work truly one-of-a-kind. Expand and refine your throwing skills through the forming of bowls, cups, lids, pitchers, and the assemblage of two-part forms. Presentations and discussions will cover how to integrate form with function. This class will use high-fire Mammoth Merlin clay and high temperature gas-fired reduction glazes. Prerequisite: Students should have completed at least two introductory to wheelthrowing courses. Class tuition includes one 25lb bag of clay per student; see *CERAMICS NOTE.

- 1041| Pouring Vessels

This course focuses on the design and construction of functional pouring vessels, including pitchers, teapots, ewers, and related spouted forms. Emphasis is placed on proportion, balance, and ergonomics, with close attention to spout geometry, handle placement, and lid fit. Through wheel throwing, altered forms, and sectional construction, students will refine vessels that pour cleanly and function with clarity. Iterative making and testing support thoughtful problem-solving and precision in form. Prerequisite: Students must have had at least two throwing classes. see *CERAMICS NOTE.

- 1063 | Majolica Glazing Techniques

Majolica refers to a white, opaque tin-based glaze, composed of frits and tin oxide that allows for colorful over-glaze decoration. Through demonstrations and lectures, students will be introduced to both traditional and non-traditional methods of glaze applications and construction techniques. Handbuilding techniques will be demonstrated and presented; those experienced in wheel throwing can work independently to create pottery forms but will not be demonstrated in class. The pieces will be fired at low-temperature in electric kilns using a red earthenware clay body. Prerequisite: Students must have completed one handbuilding class or one wheel throwing class. Class tuition includes one 25lb bag of terra cotta clay per student; see CERAMIC NOTE*.

This course emphasizes moving ideas from concept to three-dimensional forms while developing strong structural and formal awareness. Students will complete projects incorporating coil construction, slab building, and solid forms that are later hollowed. Students will have to option to focus on the construction of a larger sculptural form through coil building. Surface techniques will include texturing, slip application, under glazing, mold attachment, and glazing. The class will work in mid-range clay, slips, underglazes, and glazes. - 1142 | Large Scale Vessels: Form, Handles, Surface

Using the pottery wheel, or coiling method, students will throw and trim a large vessel, then continue to build height through coil construction, emphasizing structural integrity and intentional form. The class will place a strong emphasis on handle design, including how to build armatures to support large, expressive handles. The course will then shift to surface design, where students will transfer existing sketches onto their vessel and use sgraffito or inlay techniques to develop imagery on the exterior surface, considering narrative, rhythm, and the relationship between form and mark. Prerequisite: Students should have completed at least two ceramics courses in either wheel throwing or hand building. Class tuition includes one 25lb bag of clay per student; see *CERAMICS NOTE.
