Paper is normally considered as a 2-D art form—as a substrate for other artistic practices—yet handmade paper possesses the unique qualities for use in sculptural applications. This class will introduce the various components used to fabricate paper into three-dimensional forms. Students will learn to utilize handmade pulp and pull it into various forms from paper sheets to apply to other forms or directly on to wire forms. Colored pulp painting and collage inclusion will also be covered. NOTE: Papermaking is a wet process; please dress accordingly, closed-toed & non-slip shoes should be worn. Water-proof aprons are available. Includes materials; please see website for a list of suggested supplies.

This introductory class covers how to create mosaic art. Create beautiful, decorative wall relief or sculptural pieces using found objects, glass, marbles, stones, mirrors, dishes, and tiles. Students receive instruction in the use of mosaic tools, various supplies, and techniques from tile-cutting to tile-setting. The instructor will cover how armatures for mosaics can be created. The art of mosaic and its role in history will be discussed. No previous experience is necessary. Please see link below or website materials list; bring a lunch both days.

Learn the tools and processes for working with flat glass to create a stained-glass panel. Cutting glass, soldering, and fabrication using the copper foil technique will be covered. All tools including grinders, cutters, and soldering irons, as well as some foil, solder, and glass will be provided for small projects. You may provide colored glass of your choice, additional supplies will be available for purchase from the instructor during class. Please bring a bag lunch.

- 9508 | Found Object Sculpture

Give new meaning to ordinary objects through the art of found object sculpture using everyday, discarded, and repurposed items. Metal objects will be our primary source for inspiration, although all materials are welcome. Under the instructor’s supervision, students will have some hands-on experience using hand tools and metal fabrication equipment including a plasma cutter and mig welder. Alternative techniques for attaching items will also be explored, such as glueing and wire wrapping, along with learning how to create a maquette using cardboard construction.

Using low-tech forging setups, you will construct a single edge blade, through tang knife with a forged guard. Advance forging techniques will be covered and will address keeping overall grinding of the blade to a minimum. Learn how to construct a handle using natural and manmade materials. In this class students will learn how to forge weld a billet composed of layered mild, 1084, and 15n20 steels. Known as a go-mai steel billet this technique creates a durable and stunningly visual blade. Students will forge the billet into a blade, polish and etch the blade to reveal the patterns and layers of contrasting steels. Students will leave with a polished etched and sharpened knife. Prerequisite: Simple Knifemaking or other forging experience is required. Tuition includes most materials; please see website for supply list.

Learn the basics of table making by building an end table for your home. You will have the opportunity to laminate a hardwood top, cut tapered legs, and join table aprons to legs using simple joinery methods. The class will give you hands-on experience with both power and hand tools, including the table saw, band saw, jointer, thickness planer, drill press, router, hand planes, card scrapers, and chisels.
