The completion of a 40-hour UTSA Mediator Certificate Program is a prerequisite for enrollment in the Advanced Family Mediation Course.
This program is presented in workshop format as a 24-hour program over three weeks. Learning derives from lectures, group discussions, hands-on activities, and mock mediation exercises. The course culminates with the presentation of a “Certificate of Family Mediation” issued by UTSA in recognition of successful course completion.
In accordance with Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code 154.052(b), this 24-hour course will cover the basic principles of family law, child development, family violence and family dynamics:
- Overview of legal system and terms relating to family law
- Allocation of Resources
- Parenting Plans
- Family Systems and Dynamics
- Ages and Stages of Child Development
- Family Violence (4 hours)
- Practice Considerations
- Mediation Skills
This course meets on Wednesdays (6/3, 6/10, 6/17) from 6-9m CST, and Saturdays (6/6, 6/13, 6/20) 8am- 1pm CST.

Course content includes defining mediation; federal and state recognition of mediation; history of mediation; types of mediation; tools and techniques of mediation; understanding the role of a mediator; understanding the dynamics of conflict; differing definitions of neutrality; understanding confidentiality; communication skills in mediation; and ethics required of mediators. Learning derives from lectures, group discussions, hands-on activities, and mock mediation exercises. Course culminates with presentation of a “Certificate of Mediation” issued by UTSA in recognition of successful course completion.
