A Sociological Discussion of Groups in the Workplace

“Works well with others.”  This is a welcome comment in a note from a kindergarten teacher, a coach, or a platoon leader; or in the opening paragraph of a college reference, a job evaluation, or a candidate intro for a condo board!  In this lecture and discussion course we will consider the world of work, and just how it expects, requires, rewards, and values working well with others – obviously so if you are on a team, but also if you are a singular genius.  We are not hermits – we live and work together in varied and fascinating ways.  During this course we will watch films showing Americans at work in service jobs, at the low end of the totem pole and at the top; also in the professions and the arts. All the films are to be watched at home, and are all available on Netflix, Amazon, or Kanopy; our sociological discussion of the films will consider jobs and class aspirations, the challenge of work-family balance, and the possibility for film to point-up workplace issues. Expect a lively course!
