History of the Federal Reserve
A former member describes the Federal Reserve as “an entity with singularly enormous powers to influence financial markets and the economy.” Critics describe it as an independent and undemocratic institution that controls the American economy and yet is not accountable to the voting public. This lecture-based series will look at the history of the Federal Reserve. It will begin with a brief look at the American banking system and currency supply prior to 1913. It will explore how and why the Fed was established and subsequent reforms that made the Fed, an independent agency within the Federal Government. The series will then explore the one hundred year history of the Federal Reserve with special attention to its role in the Great Depression of the 1930, the inflationary 1970s, the deregulation of the financial markets in the 1980s and 1990s, and in the financial crisis of 2007, as well as the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in 2023.
