While Denny Hill may be the most famous regrade in Seattle's history, it was neither the largest nor the deepest. Completed between 1907 and 1909, the Jackson Street Regrade altered the greatest number of surface acres in a single project. On this 1.8 mile walk, we will travel the lesser known Jackson and Dearborn regrades, as well as explore the International District and lasts between 90-120 minutes, depending on how many questions you ask.
The tour will meet on the southwest side of the intersection of South Jackson Street and 2nd Avenue Extension South. This is near a plaza connected to and on the side of King Street Station/Amtrak Station.

- Olmsted Parks Walk - Volunteer Park
-
Join OLLI-UW and Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks (FSOP) on a guided walk in Volunteer Park. It is often referred to as the crown jewel of Seattle’s Olmsted park and boulevard system. It is the most complete and best-preserved Olmsted-designed landscape in the city.
Land purchased in 1876 was originally used as a cemetery, but in their 1903 report to the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners, the Olmsted Brothers proposed extensive improvements to an earlier park design by Parks Superintendent E.O. Schwagerl. Design drawings, developed from 1904 to 1910, incorporated Seattle's new water system facilities, and guided the development of a pastoral landscape complemented by more formal garden beds along the park's ridge.
The walk is approximately 1.5 miles long and will take roughly 2 hours.

- The Geology of Seward Park
-
Tectonic forces have placed Seattle at the intersection of multiple geologic upheavals. There have been great earthquakes every 1,000 years or so, causing uplift of the land and tossing entire forests into the bottom of lakes. Multiple times during the past 2.6 million years, a finger of an immense continental glacier scraped over the land, grinding down the highlands, sculpting the landscape, burying the bedrock under thousands of feet of sediment, and reworking the landscape into hundreds of elongated hills. Seward Park is an excellent place to see the results of all this geologic turmoil. This trip is a 2.4 mile walking tour of the park highlighting the last 40 million years of Seattle's geologic story.
*Optional: Bring your lunch and join us for a picnic after the tour.
