Lushootseed Language Institute  

This program is made possible by a generous contribution by the Puyallup Tribe.

Many Native language teachers are themselves learners of their heritage language. Lushootseed is the language of several Salish Native American tribes in Washington and Oregon. Lushootseed is a member of Coast Salish, one of two main divisions of the Salishan language family.

This 80-hour program is designed to support native Lushootseed language teachers by building lifelong language learning skills with a language first approach. This course sponsored by the Puyallup Tribe is designed to assist teachers in daycare and preschool and K-6 settings both learn more about the language itself and strategies for teaching others.

Course includes language immersion and daily conversation practice along with linguistics, language advocacy, history and geography and teaching methods using songs, games, the Lushootseed alphabet and sounds, dance and math.
