Certified Public Manager® Program Overview
The University of Washington Tacoma Certified Public Manager® Program (CPM) is a nationally accredited, comprehensive leadership and management development program for public managers and supervisors from all government levels. Washington State joins the more than 38 US states, the US Virgin Islands and the Netherlands, who makeup the National CPM Consortium, which establishes the accreditation requirements. The Certified Public Manager® Program is designed to create thoughtful practitioners who apply practical managerial techniques to address public-sector challenges. This 303 hour program (includes 40 hours of prerequisite training, a 10-hour Leadership Development Project and a 50-hour Capstone Project) is designed to be completed in twelve months. This cohort will complete the requirements to become Lean Six Sigma Green Belts this year as part of the curriculum.
The National Certified Public Manager® Consortium (NCPMC) establishes and preserves standards for the Certified Public Manager® (CPM) designation, a nationally accredited, comprehensive management development program specifically designed to prepare managers for careers in federal, state, local government and in other organizations with a public purpose. UW Tacoma received national accreditation during the first class in 2014 and continues to be actively involved at the national level.
Why choose UW Tacoma's Certified Public Manager® Program?
We use a hands-on, real world approach... The emphasis in this unique program is on practical application of theory that will maintain and improve managerial effectiveness while meeting the challenges of today's public organizations. Unlike traditional programs that require a ten week, two night a week commitment, this condensed program meets once a month, for two to three consecutive days from 8:30-4:30 p.m. Courses are highly interactive with lectures, self evaluation exercises, group activities, online pre-class work, online journaling, and a capstone project. For the Capstone, you'll choose on a work-related project that meets the needs of your agency with an in-house advisory team. Gain valuable skills that can help you move to the next level and increase your visibility in your organization. You'll also have the opportunity to network with other colleagues in leadership positions in other public agencies.
Our curriculum is based upon local needs... Instructors are experienced public managers who know what it takes to be successful in the ever changing and evolving public sector. This curriculum has been developed with an advisory board, made up of local city, state and county public managers who understand the unique issues facing Washington state government agencies.
We believe in developing talent from within... Local agencies have the opportunity to create a pool of well-trained supervisors and managers who are prepared to move to the next level when vacancies occur. In-house candidates come with valuable knowledge about organizational culture and processes that allows them to ramp up faster saving time and money.
Who Should Attend?
This program is designed for high-achieving, career oriented public supervisors and managers who hold or desire to move into mid or senior level positions. This course requires pre-class and post-class readings and assignments where you will apply what you learn in the workplace. Plan on at least 5 hours outside work per session.
- Participants must be currently employed in first-level supervisory or mid-management positions in city, county, state, tribal or non-profit agency.
- Applicants must provide evidence in their application they have completed (or provide a written plan to complete) 40 hours of an approved First Level Supervision course(s) prior to certification. Download the Pre-Req Evaluation Form to see if your prior training qualifies.
