The University of Washington Tacoma, through the Professional Development Center and the UW Tacoma Education Program, is an approved Clock Hour Provider by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for K-12 educators. Clock Hour Provider status allows UW Tacoma to document clock hours for K-12 educators who complete UW Tacoma educational activities. The UW Tacoma Professional Development Center also works with the Education Program and community resources to provide clock hour certification for high-quality teacher education opportunities offered in a variety of venues, including museums and school districts.

Features of the clock hour program

  • Programs designed for teacher education (K-12) are eligible for consideration for clock hours.
  • The clock hours option must be approved by the center and UW Tacoma's Education program prior to the activity.
  • The clock hours received in approved activities cannot be used to satisfy degree requirements.
  • The clock hours received do not appear on UW Tacoma transcripts.
  • Clock hours will be documented through a ‘non-credit transcript' provided through the center.
Enrollment in a clock-hour option course does not constitute admission to the UW Tacoma.
  • Participants pay $25 for each approved course or training event.

Individuals requesting CEUs are responsible for checking with their certifying and licensing organizations to determine if a course will be accepted as part of their required continuing education hours.

More information

UW Tacoma issues Continuing Education Units CEUs

UW Tacoma awards one Continuing Education Unit (CEU) for each ten (10) contact hours of non-credit instruction in a specified continuing education activity. To determine the number of contact hours, count the hours in the program and subtract breaks, lunches and other activities not directly part of the instructional experience. Do not use fractional hours (10, 10.5 or 10.75 would equal 1.0 CEUs.) CEUs will be awarded for UW Tacoma KeyBank PDC sponsored courses or courses and educational conferences sponsored by local and regional organzations inside or outside the UW that meet standards and have been approved in advance. Students must meet successful completion/attendance standards to be awarded CEUs.

CEUs are included on certificates for all courses taken through UW Tacoma Professional Development Center. Credit courses are not eligible for CEUs.

For course sponsored by outside organizations, participants pay $25 for each approved program. Some organizations include this fee in conference registration fees. Courses must be pre-approved by UW Tacoma prior to issuance of CEUs.

Individuals requesting CEUs are responsible for checking with their certifying and licensing organizations to determine if a course will be accepted as part of their required continuing education hours.
