Lushootseed, a central Salish language, is the indigenous language of 14 tribes in Western Washington within the Puget Sound Region. Lushootseed is a member of the Salish language family.

This 80-hour program is designed to support both beginning to intermediate level Lushootseed language learners become skilled at using language in the home, in the community, and in the classroom. This course will instruct students on language use as the foundation of language revitalization. Students will learn language skills for daily activities, conversation, games, and teaching. The course will be taught at the beginning level and will assume no prior experience with the language; however, those with Lushootseed language knowledge at any level are welcome.

Topics include: song, linguistics, conversation, reclaiming domains, video language production, language immersion, language advocacy, history, and geography. Intermediate level students will focus on vocabulary building and more complex syntax and scenarios. Course includes 80 hours or 8.0 CEUs or OSPI Clock Hours for Washington State educators.

This course is a semi-full immersion that includes instruction in conversation, reclaiming domains, language nesting, history, introductory linguistics, games, singing and using multi-media. Topics include: song and dance, linguistics, conversation, reclaiming domains, video language production, language immersion, language advocacy, history, and geography.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Share the historical, geographical and cultural context of the Lushootseed language in the Puyallup Territory.
  • Use four Lushootseed songs to reinforce language learning.
  • Understand Lushootseed phonetics and morphology.
  • Converse with others in Lushootseed for 10-20 minutes using basic sentences.
  • Understand the concept of reclaiming domains.
  • Plan and incorporate Lushootseed language learning games into daily activities.
  • Create a Lushootseed video.

    STEP 2: Find the class and click ADD TO CART.

    STEP 3: MAKE Payment or ATTACH Payment Documents: We accept credit/debit cards and Company or Organization 3rd Party Billing or Purchase Order in an up-loadable electronic format as payment. Payment or an approved 3rd Party payer document IS REQUIRED at the time of registration.

    STEP 5: Continue through the registration process until you make the PURCHASE the application and see a receipt or confirmation on your screen.

    STEP 5: Complete the Language Survey.
