Patient Care Technicians/Certified Clinical Medial Assistant  (CCMA) are in high demand in the health care field. The demand is expected to increase by 25% by the year 2026.

Patient Care Technicians/CCMA, are vital members of the health care team. They assist doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals in providing direct patient care in a variety of health care settings, such as physician offices, hospitals, and outpatient clinical settings. They will collect patient history, take, and record vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, weight, and height. They assist with scheduling procedures according to doctor's orders and provide other basic patient care tasks.

Classroom/Laboratory-ten weeks, 60 hours

Clinical Rotation-two weeks, 80 hours

The clinical rotation is a mandatory component of the course and will span two weeks. This rotation will not be scheduled until all requited documentation-including background check, drug screening, and immunizations records-has been submitted by due date, and successful completion of all coursework and laboratory activities.

Upon successful completion of all coursework, laboratory activities and clinical externship  requirements, students will sit for the proctored National HealthCareer Association (NHA) certification exam, conducted at Volunteer State Community College.

The phlebotomy course is a combination of online learning, lectures, practical labs, and a rotation in a clinical setting.  This course is designed to prepare students for the NHA (National Healthcare Association) Phlebotomy Technician certification exam. Upon completion, students will be able to 1) draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods 2) match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes 3) dispose of contaminated sharps, blood, or other biohazard fluids in accordance with laws and standards 4) draw blood from capillaries by dermal punctures, such as heel or finger stick methods 5) enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer 6) collect fluid or tissue samples and specimens at specific time intervals for tests 7) organize or clean blood-drawing trays, ensuring that all instruments are sterile and all needles or syringes are new.

Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technicians are vital members of health care teams.  They perform diagnostic tests—EKGs (also known as ECG’s) --that are instrumental in helping doctors identify cardiovascular problems in patients.  EKGs may reveal irregularities in the heart that help doctors provide appropriate care and treatment.  EKG technicians provide patient education to individuals by explaining steps involved with the procedure prior to administering the exam.  They also monitor heart performance during the exam.

 EKG Technicians work in hospitals, physician practices, urgent care offices and long-term care facilities. 

Students will learn:

• anatomy and physiology
• musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, lymphatic, and immune systems
•  how to identify cardiac rhythms
•  medical terminology and equipment operation
