Motorcycle Rider Education   

The Tennessee Motorcycle Rider Education and Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Certified Instructors/Coaches prepare and teach courses in a safe, off-street environment. These Instructors/Coaches are highly experienced riders with the patience, understanding and knowledge to help students develop the skills they need to become safe, responsible motorcyclists. Current riders and anyone thinking about riding (ages 15 and up) are encouraged to enroll in a Rider Training Course.
 
  • Motorcycle Rider Education - Basic

    This course is aimed at beginning riders 15 years and older. This is the Tennessee state-certified licensing Motorcycle Rider Education program. The course provides five hours of classroom work and ten hours of practical riding in a controlled, off-street environment. Course materials are provided including Tennessee Motorcycle Handbook, student workbook and training motorcycles (125cc-350cc street legal). Some scooters are also available and the request for a scooter must be made in advance by contacting the Office of Workforce Training.  A registration form must be completed and students must be registered one week in advance. Classes are taught by certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructors who assist participants with proper techniques. Students must pass both a written and a riding evaluation to receive a State Certificate Waiver. A certificate of completion for the course exempts the student from taking the written and riding test when applying for a motorcycle license. Class is limited to 12 students. Motorcycles will be provided for this course. Scheduled classes will be conducted rain or shine. If the instructor feels a student is not progressing or is being dangerous to themself or others, the instructor may fail the student at any time during the program. A student who receives a failing grade should not expect a refund.

    1.  Classes will begin promptly as scheduled and may run longer than scheduled due to student capabilities, weather, etc.

    2.  Plan a flexible personal schedule for the weekend.  We suggest that you don’t make plans for the evening.  This course is very concentrated.  Plan to use all spare time in the evening for rest and study.

    3.  If you are a minor, your parent or guardian must come with you to the Saturday session to sign the release forms.

    4.  There will be a one-hour lunch break each day.  There are vending machines in the school and many restaurants nearby.  You may bring a cooler with drinks and food.  Also, you may bring folding chairs for your personal comfort.

    5.  Remember to bring the required safety equipment on Saturday and Sunday: DOT helmet, eye protection, gloves that completely cover the finger and palms, long sleeve shirt or jacket, long pants… jeans or heavy material, over the ankle leather footwear (with low heels) and rain gear.  

    6.  Online E-Course - All class participants must complete an online MSF Basic E-Course prior to the start of the in-person class. Successful completion of both the E-Course and classroom training is required to receiving a passing grade from the class. 

    You will receive an email with the link to begin the E-Course at least one week prior to the start of your class. Please be aware that if you cancel or reschedule your class AFTER you begin the E-Course, you will forfeit the $39.99 portion of your registration fee for the E-Course.  

    7.  Cancellations & Rescheduling - Cancellations or rescheduling must be made seven days prior to the start of the class. Please be aware that if you cancel or reschedule your class before the seven-day deadline, but AFTER you begin the E-Course, you will forfeit the $39.99 portion of your registration fee for the E-Course. Cancellations after the seven-day deadline will forfeit the full $300 registration fee of the class. Rescheduling requests after the seven-day deadline will incur an additional $150 rescheduling fee.

    7.  Cancellations & Rescheduling - Cancellations or rescheduling must be made seven days prior to the start of the class. Please be aware that if you cancel or reschedule your class before the seven-day deadline, but AFTER you begin the E-Course, you will forfeit the $39.99 portion of your registration fee for the E-Course. Cancellations after the seven-day deadline will forfeit the full $300 registration fee of the class. Rescheduling requests after the seven-day deadline will incur an additional $150 rescheduling fee. 

    If the instructor feels a student is not progressing or is being dangerous to themselves or others, the instructor may ask the student to leave at any time during the class. A student who does not complete the class satisfactorily should not expect a refund. 

    8.  Waitlists - Registration for classes often fills several weeks in advance. If you join a waitlist, we encourage you to also register for the next available class with open seats. Being on the waitlist does not guarantee you a spot in the class. We will only contact those on the waitlist if a cancellation occurs.
