The Phlebotomy Refresher for Healthcare Providers is a one-day, detailed designed course for RNs and LPNs that need education in phlebotomy basics and skills. Participants will learn basic knowledge, skills and experience live practice. Before attending a lab session, participants will attend a short session on (1) areas of blood withdrawal, (2) infection control, (3) safety measures, (4) devices and methods of performing blood withdrawals, (5) preparation of supplies and equipment, (6) order of draw and other related information deemed by the instructor as necessary for individualized classes.
First part of the 6-hour period will focus on didactic learning, including order of draw, and venipuncture practice on manikins. Second part will focus on review and 2 live successful sticks on partners or volunteers. Risk waivers are to be signed by volunteers.
This class can be customized to serve the individual and/or healthcare facilities.

The Phlebotomy Technician program includes 10 weeks of classroom and skill training designed to provide didactic and clinical instruction in venipuncture. Altogether, the 70-hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and clinical training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. The program also includes lab exercises, live blood draws, work with a training arm, and other exercises intended to prepare students to function as an entry-level Phlebotomy Technician.
Forty successful venipunctures in a clinical setting are required, and although optional, it must be completed if the student wishes to take the National Healthcareer Association certification exam. Please see externship requirements.
WSCC Requirements:
- Students must present a High School Diploma or GED on the first night of class.
- Textbooks can be purchased at the Walters State Bookstore at the Morristown campus or from any online vendor.
- Phlebotomy Essentials 8th Edition, Ruth E. McCall, Textbook and Workbook Package, ISBN: 9781284292732. Cost: $160
- All students attending an Allied Health program in the Division of Workforce Training are required to receive the CPR-BLS and AHA Bloodborne Pathogens certifications. The course is offered each month at WSCC campuses. Cost: $80
- Externship placement program requirements:
- Criminal Background Check – Truescreen 10-panel drug screen
- HPSO Professional Liability Insurance
- TB/PPS test w/negative results - prices vary ($25)
- Flu vaccine - prices vary ($25)
- Hep B – 3 dose series
- Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) – 2 doses
- Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine – 2 doses
- Scrubs, appropriate shoes
