This course is designed to meet the training requirements for Powered-Industrial-Truck (PIT) operation in an easy-to-understand format.  The class will cover the core requirements for Class I, IV and V Powered Industrial Trucks utilizing classroom instruction, simulator practice, and drive test at the client business site.   

Time:

  • Classroom Instruction – 4 Hours
  • Simulator Drive Practice - As needed, or based on previous experience.
  • Pre-Shift Inspection and Drive Test – 30 minutes (per person per PIT)

Topics Covered

Truck-Related:

  • Operating instructions, warnings, and precautions;
  • Differences between the truck and the automobile;
  • Truck controls and instrumentation;
  • Engine or motor operation;
  • Steering and maneuvering;
  • Visibility (including restrictions due to loading);
  • Fork and attachment adaptation, operation, and use limitations;
  • Vehicle capacity;
  • Vehicle stability;
  • Vehicle inspection;
  • Refueling and/or charging and recharging of batteries;
  • Operating limitations;
  • Any other operating instructions, warnings, or precautions listed in the operator's manual for the types of vehicle that the employee is being trained to operate.

Workplace-related:

  • Surface conditions;
  • Composition of loads to be carried and load stability;
  • Load manipulation, stacking, and unstacking;
  • Pedestrian traffic;
  • Narrow aisles and other restricted places;
  • Hazardous (classified) locations;
  • Ramps and other sloped surfaces that could affect stability;
  • Areas where insufficient ventilation or poor vehicle maintenance could cause a buildup of carbon monoxide or diesel exhaust;
  • Instructor Review
  • Written Exam
  • Performance Exam
    • Pre-Shift Inspectin
    • Safe travel thrugh the worksite
    • Pickup and delivery f items using the actual work site or simulated driving course.

Note:  Topics may be modified to meet the local facility equipment and safety requirements.
