This course provides an overview of the major components of a Public Water System from the water source to the service connection. By attending this course, operators will have a better understanding of the critical role they play in the prevention of contamination of the public water system.

Attendees will learn how the various components of operations may significantly affect the total system's capacity to provide an adequate supply of clean and safe drinking water that will meet state drinking water requirements at adequate pressure to meet customers' needs.

Develop your skills in applying basic arithmetic concepts, techniques and methods to everyday problems associated with water and wastewater system operations. Water Operators will learn techniques and methods that will ensure adequate quantity, pressure and quality of drinking water that will protect public health. Wastewater Operators will learn how to solve common problems to ensure compliance with state rules to ensure protection of the environment.

This course presents approved training for Asbestos Cement Pipe Work Practice Procedures in compliance with the most recent Department of Labor and Industries regulations. Participants will learn safe, field-proven procedures to protect them from cancer-causing asbestos fibers and how to avoid costly penalties. Discover how to recognize asbestos health hazards, prevent exposure to deadly asbestos fibers and how to choose and use protective equipment. Participants will also perform approved AC pipe work practices.

In this five-day course, participants will learn how to: identify types of backflow preventers, components, and functions; inspect backflow prevention assembly installations; test and diagnose simulated problems in all types of approved backflow prevention assemblies; record and report assembly test results. Emphasis is placed on preparing for the Backflow Assembly Testing Exam, but the exam is not included in this class (see explanation below).  This class combines classroom instruction with ample hands-on practice in WETRC's BAT Lab.

This three-day course provides Backflow Assembly Testers with the information they need to meet the Professional Growth Examination requirement for Backflow Assembly Tester Certification, Professional Growth Requirement in Washington State. Participants will refresh their knowledge of backflow preventers, the backflow preventer components, and how they function. Learn the latest specifications for backflow prevention assembly installation and inspection. This is a hands-on workshop where students will practice approved procedures to test and diagnose simulated problems in different kinds of assemblies as you prepare for the BAT Professional Growth Examination.

This class is designed for BATs who want to get their Specialty Plumbers License through Washington Department of Labor and Industries. Course will focus on how to effectively prepare for the exam.

This course will cover basic hydraulic concepts as it relates to a drinking water distribution system. A few of the major topics to be covered are: Pascal's Law, head-elevation, pressure & velocity, static head, dynamic head, head loss, hydraulic grade line and gradient, Hazen-Williams formula, pressure zones, automatic control valves and pumps, water horsepower and pump efficiency, regulatory aspects. Operators will gain a better understanding of how their job impacts public health.

State and Federal regulations require a Competent Person to be present on every job site where the earth is opened and a person enters to do work. This includes sewer and water line installation and repair, utility work, road and other construction.

This class will give operators an understanding of the construction inspection process, in order to make sure construction is done properly. We will describe the progression of projects and explain inspection methods.

This course defines cross connections and describes hydraulic causes of different types of backflow and how cross connections affect public health. It covers the assessment of hazards, types of backflow prevention assemblies, their components and basic characteristics of each. Participants will learn the ten essential elements of a cross connection control program. They will learn how to prioritize inspections, where premises isolation is required and when point-of-use protection is acceptable. The use of corrective and enforcement actions will be presented. Backflow assembly testing, reporting and record keeping will also be discussed.

WETRC has many different hydrants at our facility, so physical demonstrations and hands-on practice are peppered throughout the class time to help students practice identifying and repairing common hydrant problems. This class will spend some time outdoors, so dress accordingly.

This course is an introduction to sample collection for potable and non-potable water sources. While this course focuses on Bacteriological Sample Collection, students will also receive training to prepare them for collecting other types of required samples used in evaluating water quality.

This course prepares water and wastewater employees to apply proper techniques using acceptable methods to collect various types of water samples.

Take the mystery out of Metering requirements of the Municipal Water Law by understanding correct procedures to tap water mains and install new service connections. Discover ways to ensure your water meters are accurately reporting water usage and up-to-date information on selecting the best type of water meter. Learn the benefits of metering water usage and gain knowledge needed for water meter repair.

This class will give operators an understanding of how automatic control valves are used throughout water systems to manage pressure, flow and other applications. Taught in partnership with Cimco-GC Systems.

Water and wastewater disinfection affects public health and compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and wastewater discharge requirements. This practical, three-day workshop provides up-to-date information about current disinfection practices. Learn how to control disinfection costs, operate and maintain disinfection systems, comply with regulations, and provide effective barriers against disease outbreaks.

Public Water Systems Operators use principles of hydraulics daily in the operation of their systems. The day-to-day operation of a water and wastewater system requires an understanding of hydraulic principles.

In this practical 3-day workshop, students will be introduced to important basic concepts of hydraulics and learn how hydraulics affects the components of both water and wastewater systems.

This workshop, based on the ABC Need-To-Know Criteria, provides students with a review of the processes needed to help ensure that operators have the knowledge to adequately operate, maintain and manage the public water system. Attendees will review topics relevant to Water Distribution Manager level I and II Operator Certification Exam. During the course, students will practice answering mock exam questions, referenced to all categories of the ABC Need-To-Know criteria.

This workshop, based on the ABC Need-To-Know Criteria, provides students with a review of the processes needed to help ensure that operators have the knowledge to adequately operate, maintain and manage the public water system. Attendees will review topics relevant to Water Distribution Manager level I and II Operator Certification Exam. During the course, students will practice answering mock exam questions, referenced to all categories of the ABC Need-To-Know criteria.

This one-day class is for those students who want some extra help with the math problems that are typically found on the Water Distribution Manager III & IV Certification Exams. The class will review some basic math concepts, review the ABC formula sheet, and practice sample math problems.

Class topics include: Review order of operations, dimensional analysis, significant figures ABC formula sheet, road map approach to solving story problems, practice sample math questions, and how to manipulate formula.

This class is held the day prior to the WDM III & IV Exam Prep class.  You may take this math class without registering for the exam prep class; this allows you to choose which class, or combination of classes, best suits your needs. Students wishing to take both the Math Review and the Certification Exam Prep classes will need to register for each class separately.  For details about the WDM III & IV Certification Exam Prep class, click here.                   

Public Water Systems are required to have trained and certified operators to operate the water system. This workshop, based on the ABC Need-To-Know Criteria, provides students with a review of the processes needed to help ensure that operators have the knowledge to adequately operate, maintain and manage the public water system.

Attendees will discuss and gain knowledge about topics relevant to Water Distribution Manager Level III and IV Water Works Operator Certification. The information presented will be used by operators in making decisions for the operation of the Public Water Systems that will influence water quality, water supply, and public health protection.

Topics covered include: Exam Prep, Formulas & Conversions, Math Review, Science Review, Compliance, Safety, Water System Operation Maintenance & Procedures, CCC and Backflow, Control Systems, and Supervision & Management.

ADDITIONAL WDM III & IV MATH REVIEW CLASS (separate registration required):  A supplemental math class titled WDM III & IV Math Review is offered the day before this Cert Exam Prep Course. The optional math class is geared toward those planning to take the WDM III & IV Cert Exam who would like additional practice and instruction in math pertaining to the exam.  The math class is a separate registration from the two-day exam prep class and is not a requirement; you may select which class, or combination of classes, best suits your needs. For details on the one-day WDM III & IV Math class, click here.  

Take the mystery out of proper methods to install and maintain pipe, by understanding issues facing water and wastewater utilities with aging pipe infrastructure. Discover new ways to effectively control water loss. With up-to-date information on piping materials, components and fittings, learn ways to locate pipe and identify leaks. Students will also learn to identify methods to reduce pumping costs by applying skills gained by attending this workshop.

Public Water Systems are required to have employees certified as WTPOs for the operation of their treatment processes. This interactive exam-preparation workshop prepares employees of Public Water Systems to operate the treatment processes in a manner that ensures the quality of water provided at the service connection meets drinking water quality standards in compliance with federal and state drinking water regulations.

Students will gain a better understanding of the Need-to-Know Criteria, Water Treatment Basics and an improved ability to answer the WTPO I & II Certification Exam questions.

Updated texts and audio-visual aids build a foundation from which to manage, operate, and maintain large- and small-water systems. Learn important water-quality and public-health information, practice identifying water-system components, learn component purposes and functions, and be briefed on applicable drinking water rules and regulations, certification and professional growth requirements. Students will pick up practical safety and health information vital to reducing injuries and avoiding costly and embarrassing enforcement actions. Learn the latest information on water storage, pumps and controls, disinfection, pipes, valves, hydrants, meters and records.

All students will receive the latest print edition of the Water Distribution System Operation and Maintenance manual.
