Anthropology of Aliens
NEW!
This course introduces students to the basics of cultural anthropology through the exploration of the array of alien cultures found throughout science fiction literature, television, and film. Also discussed is the cultural impact of alien life coming to Earth along with an exploration of xenolinguistics, the various alien languages that exist in science fiction. This linguistic component will also discuss the relationship between language and culture. Science fiction often uses the alien as a means of representing man in order to explore the human condition. Future discussed will be the reasoning behind the need to use aliens as cultural mirrors for humans. Through exploring select alien cultures, students will gain insight into human culture and the impact aliens have had on contemporary society. This is an adult class that is also open to students age 16 - 17.
