Just like any novel, a short story contains plot, setting, description, dialogue, character development – and, hopefully, a superb hook to capture the reader’s initial interest. But unlike novels, short stories must achieve all that in less than 7,500 words. A challenge? Yes! But once mastered, the short story can become your stepping-stone to longer works such as the novelette, the novella, and even the full-fledged novel. If you’re ready for a learn-by-doing approach to writing, join us for this chance to bring your short story idea to life. By the end of the class, you’ll have a viable short story, the opportunity to receive additional instructor feedback after the class’s conclusion, sources for publication, and many handouts to aid your future writing endeavors.

While "pastel" as an adjective means "pale in color", pastels as a medium are anything but faded. Through pairing powdered pigment with a binder, the colors in a finished work of pastels more closely match that of the natural dried pigments than any other medium! In this class, we will explore the long and storied history of pastels; familiarize ourselves with the pigments, surfaces, and tools used to create pastel artwork; and experiment with creating such art ourselves. Whether you're a novice or an accomplished artist, all are welcome to join in for a meaningful taste of the pastel medium.

    All materials provided.
