Pirkei Avot - or "Ethics of the Fathers," as it is known in English - is a list of miscellaneous proverbs, opinions, and ideas found within the first layer of the compendium of Jewish religious teachings called the Talmud (literally "The Learning"). In this class, we will start with a brief introduction to the Talmud - what it is, why it was written, and what the layers of it entail - before jumping in to study the text in both English and the original Hebrew. Students will not only consider the verses within their historical context between the end of the Second Temple Period and 220 CE, but also discuss parallels between these teachings and others with which they are familiar.

You don't have to speak fluent Hebrew to translate Biblical or other ancient texts. What you need is a basic set of grammar rules plus access to dictionaries and conjugation tables. In this class, you will learn how to read the Aleph-Bet, how Hebrew words are constructed, and how to use freely available websites to help you translate Hebrew texts word by word. Each class will cover one area of Hebrew syntax and then translate small pieces of text together using what we've learned so far. You'll learn the difference between "inside" and "outside" translation and start translating a Hebrew text of your choice, whether from the Bible or from a huge, free selection of other texts.
