The Great Basin, a strange and other-worldly landscape of salt lakes, boiling springs, disappearing rivers and rugged mountains, embraces most of Nevada, western Utah and southeastern Oregon. The basin was settled by Native Americans at least 10,000 years ago, but was one of the last regions settled by Anglo-Americans, although many of the 49ers passed across the area on the California Trail. We will discuss the physical aspects of the area and the long and varied human history, from the earliest Native American peoples to the ill-fated Donner Party and the silver and gold bonanzas that led to the eventual permanent settlement of the basin. No class 11/21.
