This course will focus on the history of mining throughout Arizona. From minerals mined by Native Americans to the mineral discoveries made by European settlers followed by the United States during it westward expansion. Learn why copper is one of the 5Cs in Arizona. Coverage includes some of the individuals who sought to exploit Arizona's vast mineral wealth. Learn about Arizona's Copper Kings and the towns they founded based upon the mineral wealth extracted. Understand the significance of Arizona's vast mineral wealth and its contribution to industry in the United States and the world.

In this course, students will gain an understanding of cliff dwellings in central Arizona, including their architecture, engineering, cultural context, and environmental settings. By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify key sites, understand recent research and recognize modern preservation challenges.
