The Magic of Writing for Children

Writing for a child or teen is a kind of time travel. We are writing, in part, for our younger selves. In writing, we recapture our first thrill of discovery—the way books kindled our imagination, how we sometimes knew we’d found ourselves on the page. We remember how “known” that made us feel—and we long to offer that gift of welcome to a new generation. In this class, tailored each quarter to its participants, we are a community of children’s writers creating magic. Course content focuses on the most effective tools for crafting vibrant characters, structuring captivating storylines, and finding the unique voice that will speak best to your readers. Lessons include lecture, writing exercises, and group critique.
