Oil Painting: Beginning and Continuing

Working from still life, students will learn fundamental oil painting techniques with a focus on composition & color theory, including basic color mixing and juxtaposition. We will explore different types of paint application (layering glazes and scumbles, impasto, etc.) as well as various underdrawing approaches. We will look at examples of classic and contemporary painting to promote discussion of theory and technique. Assignments are carefully designed to be simple to initiate, and broad enough to elaborate. Each class includes demonstrations, painting time, and individual interaction with the instructor. Students will complete 2-3 paintings during the quarter.

Prerequisite: drawing experience recommended. Returning students welcome.
