 What You’ll Learn

✔ Contractor Licensing Process – Step-by-step guidance on preparing and submitting your BC-A/r application package to the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors.
✔ TN Construction Laws & Regulations – The Contractors Licensing Act (Tenn. Code Ann. Title 62, Chapter 6) and the Board’s rules, including Rule 0680-01-.29 for the Limited Residential License.
✔ 2018 International Residential Code (IRC): Instruction is based on the 2018 IRC, the edition the State designates for the BC-A/r licensing program. The Board for Licensing Contractors follows the code editions adopted by the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office.
✔ Blueprint Reading: Read and interpret residential plans so you can build accurately and to code.
✔ Business & Financial Essentials: Loans, liens, insurance, accounting, and the other basics of running a small construction company.

What Does the BC-A/r License Allow?

The BC-A/r is a restricted license for contracting single-family residential projects. The Board assigns your monetary limit based on your financial statement, up to $125,000. Unlike other license classifications, the BC-A/r has no 10% bid tolerance. The contract value cannot exceed your limit, and that limit includes the cost of land and your profit. To raise your limit above $125,000 or remove the restriction, you must pass the state exams. Completing this course does not by itself qualify you for a license. You must also meet all other Board requirements, including the financial statement, proof of insurance, experience, and references.

Important Note About Building Codes 
This course teaches the 2018 IRC because it is the state-designated edition for the licensing program. Local jurisdictions in Tennessee may adopt a different edition of the IRC or add local amendments. As a licensed contractor, you are responsible for finding out and following the building codes, local amendments, permit requirements, and inspection requirements of each jurisdiction where you work.
