Political Scheming for Power and Status Within the Department of Defense (3-Week Class 10/6, 10/13, 10/20) (Tuesdays, 5:30pm-7:00pm CT)   NEW!

Explore the political intricacies of the U.S. defense establishment and the influences that determine the structure, size, budgets and configuration of its component parts with someone who has been there. Session one focuses on the institutional competition between and among the President as Commander-in-Chief, the Congress and its oversight committees, and the needs and aspirations of the Pentagon and the military departments. Session two delves into the competitive methods and tactics for power and prestige among the military services, their constituencies and supporters. Session three concludes with an examination of the internal jealousies within each military service. Interwoven in these sessions we will confront the power of the defense industrial base, multiple support and interest groups, influences from think tanks, and the strength of American public opinion. Class size limit: 98.
