A healthy microbiome, the population of helpful bacteria that live in and on our bodies, is a critical factor contributing to the wellness of an individual. Conversely, an out-of-balance microbiome has been implicated in the dysfunction of many human systems, ranging from the digestive system to the immune system to the nervous system, leading to chronic illness. In this course we will develop a deeper understanding of 1) the commensal bacteria living on and in our bodies, 2) what these bacteria do, 3) the consequences of altering the mammalian microbiome, 4) the factors that help maintain a fully functional microbiome.
