  • Take a tour of the art and science of hurricane forecasting! Course topics will include understanding Florida's hurricane history, the basics of what makes the most powerful storms on Earth tick, how scientists "see" hurricanes today and prepare society for their impacts, and how tropical cyclone activity may change globally in the 21st Century.

    In this limited enrollment course, students will receive semi-private coaching as they craft and refine a short piece of writing. Over five sessions, participants will explore different genres, refresh writing skills, and work to find their own writer’s voice with regular instructor feedback.

    This will be a three-part course. The first class, taught by Professor Michael Driscoll, will focus on creating the American republic, with a focus on the principles of liberty. On what principles did the Founders create the United States? What thoughts motivated them? The second class will focus on religious liberty and the founding, and what current constitutional law is on the topic. This class will be taught by Denise Harle, director of FSU Law's First Amendment Clinic. The third class will focus on federalism and the Constitution. What is federalism? How has it evolved? Professor Phillip Pinell will teach this course.

  • The initial challenge when attempting to gain understanding of the range of immigration, refugee, and asylee statuses as well as authorized even if undocumented is to develop a wider recognition of the corresponding lexicon of terms, which is also essential for purposes of navigating an array of narratives which in many instances may conflate such key terms that this three-week mini-course will unpack.

  • Photograph of Stalin writing at a desk with a pipe in his mouthIn this course, we will examine the last 100 years of Russian history through a closer look at the personalities of its rulers: Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khruschev, Leonid Brezhnev, Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin, and Vladimir Putin. Each week, we will consider one of these major Soviet or post-Soviet leaders. We will explore their personal backgrounds, how each of them came to power and held on to power, and how their personalities and peculiarities affected the course of Russian history.

    This course will review the role of women's historical involvement in politics, both in the U.S. and internationallyThe Queen and Margaret Thatcher 1 July 1979 (6992989180).jpg. Research from the Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University (a leading source of scholarly research and data on women in politics) and other resources will be used as data sources for the presentations. This topic has been offered as a workshop at both the University of Florida and Florida State University, and participants seem very interested in this discussion.
