Dive into the wonderful world of chairmaking by crafting a fireside stool from green wood! In this class, students will build a sturdy stool using traditional green woodworking techniques. Freshly felled “green” wood is pliable and responsive, making it well-suited for learning foundational woodworking skills. Beginning with sections of white ash logs, students will use draw knives and shaving horses to shape the legs of their stools. They’ll also use unique chairmaking tools to carve the seat from white pine, and will try several handplanes and round bottom planes as they shape and bevel their stools. Through a combination of basic chair geometry, hands-on tool use, and effective techniques, this class will provide students with a well-balanced stool and the confidence to take on future woodworking projects. Finishing techniques, including painting, will be discussed so students can put on the final touches at home.
This class is designed as an accessible introduction to chairmaking and green woodworking. No prior woodworking experience is required, and all tools are provided. Students should expect periods of standing and hands-on tool use; moderate hand and grip strength is necessary.

- Personal protective equipment: safety glasses and hearing protection are provided for students and required for certain tools in our workshops, but you may wish to bring your own for fit and comfort.
