Shibori is a Japanese textile art used to create repeating patterns on fabric. Using a combination of folding, compressing, sewing, and dyeing, shibori artists can make an incredibly diverse range of designs, from delicate and subtle to bold and striking. Like other textile crafts, the techniques reflect the landscape, history, and culture of individual makers. This Fiber Week, North House is thrilled to offer two courses with Japanese shibori artist Makiko Tokunaga. Makiko has conducted deep research into shibori with aging practitioners of the Tokushima province, and is carrying on this living tradition through her work teaching at her home studio in Naruto City, Japan.

In this intermediate workshop—best suited for those with prior experience in shibori or extensive hand stitching—Makiko will teach the Katano techniques. Students can choose between “takewaku” or sea wave pattern, or create their own designs. They can also learn the kikamon oninui pattern, designed by his daughter. Students will stitch and dye their work using an indigo vat. This quiet and contemplative work will allow time for Makiko to share stories from her rich knowledge of Japanese textile work. Students should be able to sit and stitch for several hours at a time.

A materials fee of approximately $60-$75 will be due at the time of class.
