Medicines of the North: A 5-Day Boreal Botanical Experience

Medicines of the North is an immersive five-day exploration of the healing plants, traditions, and ecological wisdom of the North. Rooted in the rich botanical heritage of the boreal landscape and north country, this course invites participants into a hands-on journey of medicinal plant identification, ethical wildcrafting, sensory experiences, seasonal herbalism practices, and handcrafting. Together, we will study the medicinal properties and traditional uses of northern trees, shrubs, lichens, berries, and other herbs while deepening our understanding of the relationships between land, climate, culture, and wellness. Through guided walks, herbal preparations, storytelling, and experiential learning, we will cultivate both practical skills and a deeper connection to the rhythms and medicines of the North.

Physical ability note: Participants will also enjoy gentle, guided walks to observe and identify local plants in their habitats. These easy hikes will last approximately 30-60 minutes and take place several times throughout the week, with a relaxed pace suitable for most fitness levels. Students may opt out of these and work on individual botanical projects in the classroom as an alternative.

Students ages 16+ may register for this course independently.
